Frequently Asked Questions

Your dog loves to have fun. And you want to know that they’re playing safely.

In order to keep them safe, we recommend that you get to know how your dog interacts with the Sky Track before leaving them unsupervised. This is especially important if you've set up the track in an unfamiliar space (camping, picnics, parks, etc).

Double check the distance of the bumpers from trees or other anchor points, making sure your dog(s) cannot get wrapped around one of them.

Walk the area where your dog(s) will be able to roam. Check for holes or objects that could cause potential harm.

If you plan to have your dog(s) on the run for an extended period of time, do they have a place for shade and water?

Some dogs may relax right away.

Other dogs will be quite hesitant and may feel as though something is chasing them–yes, the pulley is following them close behind.

With a little time and increased familiarity, most dogs will have no problem running, playing, and resting while connected to the system.

We strongly recommend using a harness rather than a collar.

It takes the direct strain away from their neck and distributes it into their chest and shoulders.  The Neck-Safe Bungee provided with your kit will provide additional relief if your dog reaches the end of the line.

A harness will also help isolate the leash away from their face. This can help discourage your dog from chewing on (and possibly through) it.

We do not recommend attaching a retractable leash to the Rover Roamer Sky Track. If you choose to use one, we strongly advise that you stay present with your dog.

We offer some bungee leash and chew-resistant leash alternatives here.

The rope will likely sag a little after 12-24 hours.  This can happen from excessive pulling from your dog, temperature changes, and by inherent stretch in the rope. Even static lines, especially those with lengths of 100 ft or more, have an allowable stretch of 3%.

Pulling the line with one hand toward the Nite-Ize ratchet while pulling the rope end back toward you with the other hand is a great way to get an extra couple of inches through the teeth of the ratchet. If you have a second person available, this can be done even more effectively with one person pulling the rope toward the ratchet while the other pulls it through and secures it.

Your new Sky Track was built for strength and durability.

It is, by far, the strongest and most secure Rope or Cable Dog Run available on the market.

Here is a breakdown of the component strengths:

  • Ratchet straps have a max break strength of 3,000 lbs and a working load of 1,000 lbs
  • Tree/Anchor straps have a breaking strength over 2,000 lbs
  • Carabiners can hold up to 5,000 lbs across their length
  • Pulleys can handle up to approx 2,700 lbs
  • Our rope has a max break strength of 2,500 lbs
  • The Nite-Ize rope ratchets have a max break strength of 1,500 lbs and a working load limit of 500 lbs.
  • The 3/16”-¼” wire cable is rated, by itself, for 4,200 lbs.  When swaged and looped with wire cable nuts, the strength is reduced, but it will still have a holding capacity of at least 2,000 lbs.
  • The Neck-Safe Bungees have the lowest max break strength of any of the components.  Depending on the size of your dog, we hand-select bungees that range in breaking strength from approx 100 lbs (5mm bungees for dogs under 15 lbs) to over 400 lbs (16mm bungees for dogs over 60 lbs).

You can always purchase an additional Neck-Safe Bungee and double them up if you are concerned about the size and strength of your dog.

We recommend using a harness (to protect their necks from sudden stops) in combination with a Neck-Safe Bungee to stop them more slowly when restricted by the bumpers at each end of the rope.

To ensure your dog’s continued safety, be sure to check your leash as well as the nylon components of your Sky Track system–these are the elements that will show wear before the steel elements.

We pride ourselves on creating the highest quality track system on the market, and we work hard to build a product that gives your dog both safety and freedom.

All static lines will stretch up to 3% over time so be patient and eventually the rope will stop dragging so much due to weather, temperature changes, and inherent stretch.

Your dog’s safety is priceless, and we believe that our Sky Track system is worth the investment (and the peace of mind it provides). We use the highest quality components to ensure a product that offers maximum fun and safety for your dog.

When comparing ours to similar systems available online, you will immediately notice a difference in the quality of our components, and the ease of use of our kit.

We know how much you care about your pup, and we believe a one-time investment in our Sky Track system will be worth the peace of mind it gives you, and the safe play it offers your dog.

Take a look at your surroundings for some of our favorite non-tree anchors:

  • A fencepost
  • Telephone poles, sign posts, etc
  • Man-made structures like bathrooms
  • Top of a tent if well-supported by a stake (only for small dogs)
  • Ladder or rack on RV or Trailer
  • Picnic table (line will be angled down toward the table)
  • Car or Camper roof rack

If nothing higher up is available, you can use your car bumper to at least get part of the track off the ground.

In an otherwise unusable situation, the Sky Track can also be used as a ground track, as long as you are aware of the tripping hazard it may create.  Secure each end under heavy rocks, car tires, or other heavy items.  These items must have a weight that correlates with the weight and strength of your dog(s).
